Thousands of Americans in Washington, DC and Across the Country "Displaced"

Washington, DC -- On April 28, 2007, thousands of Americans will leave their homes and gather at the National Mall with their only shelter, a cardboard box, in tow. They will build their "makeshift huts" and experience in a small way, what the forcibly displaced people of Northern Uganda live through every day. For one night, the National Mall will be transformed into a displaced person?s camp to draw attention to the horrific circumstances that have been ongoing in Northern Uganda for 20 years; a situation that has only become more perilous with 1.5 million people expected to starve due to the recent 50% reduction in United Nation?s food rations.

Thousands of Ugandans have been violently evicted from their homes and transported to overcrowded camps due to the gruesome murders and kidnapping of children to be used as soldiers and sex slaves by the Lord?s Resistance Army. These IDP camps were established as a temporary solution to the war to better protect civilians from the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). Sadly, the camps are far from secure and house up to 1.8 million people, with more than 1,000 people dying every week due to the harsh conditions. As of April 1, 2007, even more will die due to their complete dependence upon the United Nations food rations which have been cut in half without the knowledge of those living in the camps. Northern Uganda now has a generation of youth that has never known peace.

Displace Me is Invisible Children?s response to this emergency, saying that "Every War Has an End." Held in 15 locations nationwide, Displace Me will begin at noon on April 28th and conclude the following morning. The event will focus on three main objectives: simulation, sacrifice and strength in size. The thousands of participants at each location will send a bold statement to the U.S. and Ugandan governments by demanding the U.S. take an active role in Ugandan peace talks and the current food crisis facing the Ugandan people.
Last year, Invisible Children hosted an event called the "Global Night Commute," in which 80,000 Americans slept outside in their downtown city districts to end the 20-year war in Northern Uganda. Two months later, peace talks ensued. This year, Invisible Children is hoping that Displace Me will be an event that will bring the peace talks to a close and finally return the displaced people to their homes.

About Invisible Children, Inc.
Established in 2005, Invisible Children is a non-profit organization based in San Diego, California that is dedicated to providing financial resources to invisible children by documenting their true, untold stories in a creative and relevant way. The organization was created after the release of the film ?Invisible Children: Rough Cut?, a revealing documentary about the life of child soldiers in Northern Uganda. The filmmakers, Jason Russell, Bobby Bailey and Laren Poole, are also the founders of Invisible Children, Inc. Currently, Invisible Children employs 200 people in the war-torn area of Northern Uganda and is putting 520 kids through school, with plans to see that number grow.
